Service management for triple play services -- Managing increased complexity and ensuring quality of experience
Telecommunications and cable companies face new strategic challenges, including: margin erosion, consolidation, technology changes, branding and global competition. As persistent competition compels the rapid expansion of product offerings, and as customers expect consistently high service levels, providers look for ways to grow and retain a loyal customer base.
Introducing new services efficiently—such as voice over IP (VoIP), video on demand (VoD) and IP television (IPTV)—providers must maximize their investments made in existing infrastructures. They also need dynamic service management tools to support these sophisticated new services. But to achieve long-term success, triple play service providers (offering voice, video, data and other Internet Protocol (IP)-based services) must place an emphasis on content, customer satisfaction, price and quality of service (QoS).
Tivoli® Netcool® software for triple play gives providers a complete, transparent view of infrastructure and next-generation services—all the way from the core network to the customer’s site. It is a best-in-class, end-to-end service management suite. Using the Tivoli Netcool Portfolio, you can fulfill customers’ expectations as you improve your bottom line and accelerate your business. With Tivoli Netcool software for triple play services, you can leverage a real-time, flexible technology to:
- Gain an end-to-end view of service quality—measuring key performance indicators (KPIs) and key quality indicators (KQIs)—to more effectively manage performance of your triple play services
- Proactively monitor & visualize voice, video, data and other IP services from the physical infrastructure layer all the way up to the application layer to ensure quality of experience (QoE)
- Launch new IP services quickly, without entailing additional costs
- Help drive customer satisfaction by enabling services to work right the first time—and every time
- Get a real-time view into how customers, service level agreements (SLAs) and revenue are affected by service degradation
Compliance and Standards
To support the delivery of next-generation services, and to improve the competitive advantage and profitability of their current offerings, service providers are looking to bridge the gap between traditional, circuit-switched voice networks and emerging, convergence-oriented technologies.
Industry standards and frameworks such as ITIL® and eTOM are playing an increasingly significant role in how service providers manage information technology and develop a comprehensive strategy. In addition, New Generation Operations Systems and Software (NGOSS) initiatives are critical to enable the transformation of provisioning, activation, monitoring and billing solutions to support next-generation services.
IBM® is an active member of the Telemanagement Forum, the Service Creation Community and other industry organizations, providing strategic leadership and guidance to help service providers improve the management and effectiveness of operation support systems and services for our customers and the industry.
Tivoli® Netcool® software provides support for the standards that are shaping today's service provider market -- including eTOM and ITIL -- to enable service providers to leverage Operation Support Systems (OSS) as a competitive advantage and to maximize new market opportunities.
eTOM
The Enhanced Telecom Operations Map (eTOM) is a business process framework developed by the Telemanagement Forum (TMF) for use by service providers and others within the industry to guide the definition, development, procurement and development of Operation Support Systems (OSS) and Business Support Systems (BSS). The TMF is a non-profit global organization that provides leadership and guidance to improve the management and operation of information and communication services.
IBM® is a member of the TMF, and the Tivoli® Netcool® portfolio enables service providers to utilize the eTOM framework and improve operational efficiency by streamlining business processes and strategically aligning technology and operations with business objectives.
Telecom Italia, an IBM Tivoli Netcool customer and Italy’s leading fixed-line and mobile operator, was awarded the TMF’s first ever Operational Excellence Award in recognition of the significant business benefits derived through the implementation of an OSS/BSS solution using the TMF framework.
