Enhancements to IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for System Backup and Recovery
Patch Level 5.6.5.1 added the following enhancements:
Limited function support for AIX 5.3 This patch may be obtained from the SysBack Patches download directory. Please review the entire README1st.sysback.565.efix1.txt file BEFORE attempting to install this patch. It provides details on the AIX 5.3 support provided.
Version 5.6.5 added the following enhancements:
Perform an unprompted system installation from SysBack images stored in a TSM server
Improve the usability of backups to CD / DVD devices |
New option to stream backups to DVD via UDF file system eliminates large disk staging areas in most cases (AIX 5.2+)
ISO9660 format backups to CD / DVD still available |
Expanded backup types allowed for CD / DVD devices to include all SysBack backup types: full system, volume group, file system, logical volume, and file / directory |
Use the SMIT interface to create CD / DVD backup scripts |
Schedule CD / DVD backup scripts using the SysBack scheduling interface |
Restore file / directory attributes (ownership, permissions, timestamps, or ACLs) without the need to restore the entire file content (AIX 5.2+) |
Ability to specify different destinations for each file system or volume group to be restored (two column file list) |
Increase flexibility of the AIX ODM creation during system installation via 3 different options:
Classic: the default, existing function |
Yes: Force copies the ODM from the backup image over the RAMFS ODM |
No: Only recovers "detectable devices" to their default attributes |
Note: Useful for environments that clone large numbers of systems "assembly line" style |
Option to execute a user defined script between the first and second boot of the installation process
Note: Can be used to import volume groups on RAID and other Disk Subsystems that aren’t normally visible to AIX and SysBack until the install process is completed. This ensures a seamless recovery of all volume groups on the system by allowing the customer to create a script that will configure their specialized disk subsystems during the installation process rather than waiting until after the system is recovered. |
Specify for SysBack to eject a write protected tape if ejected during the backup process |
Specify for SysBack to eject the backup tape at the end of the backup process |
Perform "invisible backups" by specifying that SysBack reset the atime and mtime of files after a backup completes |
Version 5.6.1 added the following enhancements:
Pass-thru support for all AIX operating system language locales |
Support for configuration of network ports to communicate through firewalls |
Ability to restore the permissions of a filesystem mount point during recreation |

Interoperable data restore between backups of systems running AIX 4.3 or AIX 5L |
Offline Mirror Backup (split mirror) |
Support for LPAR capable systems, like the IBM pSeries 690 and other LPAR capable systems |
Non-sparse file restore support; of particular benefit to database users restoring database files, especially users of Oracle |
Additional non-zero return code for successful backup, but with non-fatal errors |
Copy backups from one media format to another |

Version 5.2 added the following features and enhancements:
Full system backup, restore, and installation using the IBM 7210-025 DVD-RAM device, or the CD burner of your choice.
For DVD and CD backups, the mksbcd process allows you to select multiple platform options for cloning systems - and will automatically prepare the system and media for that purpose. |
The sysback command has been enhanced to allow backups to file to be stored to DVD or CD at a later time. |
Multiple exclude list files allowed. Backup commands support a user specified exclude list at the time of backup, or to set an exclude list to be processed for every backup operation. |
Exclude list processing on volume group level restore processes. |
Restore processing enhanced to allow the recreation of LVM structures and perform data restoration in a single step. |
Backup scripts enhanced to allow the backup command output (errors and standard messages) to be redirected to the file of choice - without having to manually modify the script. |
Remote services enhanced to allow temporary disablement of a backup host when that host, or its network route to that host, is down. |
Enhanced end of tape processing for multi-volume backups. Send e-mail or execute a script to control your tape library at the end of every tape - local or remote. |
Mirror or unmirror at the volume group level rather than individually manipulating each logical volume. |
Increased the allowed physical partition (PP) size from 64MB to 1024 MB. |
