Step toward SOA with the best practices of IBM's SOA Lifecycle
Rick Thoma In today's global economy, you can't afford to have frequently-changing business processes impede customer wins and revenue growth. Line-of-business managers need your IT department's support to react quickly to business dynamics and longer-term changes, such as compliance with new regulations. Service—oriented architecture (SOA) prepares IT to be flexible, relevant and supremely responsive to anything thrown its way, so business profits—and your IT department—can shine. First in a continuing series of articles on SOA.

Secure the perimeter of your computing environment with Tivoli Access Manager for e-business
Tim Hahn Tivoli Access Manager for e-business, a hub for Web-based authentication, session management and access control, can help you build a services oriented architecture (SOA) that embraces z/OS-based transactions. Tim Hahn, a security architect from IBM Tivoli, explains how you can use Tivoli Access Manager in combination with your z/OS system to provide single sign-on to multiple Web-based applications, enforce access controls at the perimeter of your computing environment, and audit interactions with Web-based business transactions. Selecting the number of strings for VSAM files under CICS®/TS
Tuning strings for VSAM files can be like walking a tightrope. If you're too cautious and under-allocate them, you'll impact response time. If you're too generous, you risk wasting valuable resources that could be better used elsewhere. Now you can find the right balance in string assignments to individual files and LSR pools. Read this complimentary white paper for best practices on optimizing your CICS application. Author Eugene Hudders, president of Advanced Computer Technology, Inc., has four decades of experience with the mainframe.

The Enterprise Service Bus: Integrating core back-end applications with Web services
Business integration is one requirement driving the shift toward service oriented architecture on System z. It's more than just plugging services together. Reaching a higher level of enterprise integration - where costs go down and IT flexibility improves – requires an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB). Author Mark Lillycrop, chief analyst at Arcati Research Ltd. and associate at Valley View Ventures, Inc., will help you better understand the ESB infrastructure and how it performs message routing and converts transfer protocols, responds to data and process integration "on the fly", and simplifies the integration of existing applications with Web services.
