This course is designed for Tivoli Deployment professionals who need to know about Java, to help them during the deployment process. This course is not intended to teach Java programming, and assumes minimal programming experience.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Describe Object-Oriented Programming.
- Describe Java concepts such as: Java program files, Classes, Interfaces, Packages, Applets, Applications, Servlets, JSPs, and the JRE.
- Locate information about Java.
- Locate JavaDoc documentation.
- Interpret command-line error messages.
- Describe Java's exception model.
- Interpret stack traces.
- Modify property files.
- Generate and interpret logs with the JLog package.
- Use GSKit to create new key stores and certificates.

This course contains eight units. Each unit has an overview presentation, and some have a series of student exercises designed to reinforce the concepts presented. The course contains the following units:
- Java Fundamentals
- Unit 1: Object-Oriented Programming - this unit explains the basic concepts of Object-Oriented Programming.
- Unit 2: Java Concepts - in this unit, you will learn the concepts of Java. You will also learn how to set up the Java Run Time Environment (JRE) and how to compile and run Java programs.
- Unit 3: Problems and Solutions - in this unit, you will learn some of the problems that Java applications encounter and how to solve them. You will also learn about the Java security manager.
- Unit 4: For More Information - in this unit, you will learn how to use JavaDocs and the command-line programs to obtain more information about Java.
- Managing Java Applications
- Unit 1: Property Files - this unit explains how to modify property files to affect application behavior.
- Unit 2: Extending Java Applications - this unit shows how to add packages to a Java application to extend it.
- Unit 3: Logging with JLog - this unit explains how to configure JLog, the package used for logging in most IBM Tivoli Java applications.
- Unit 4: Cryptography with GSKit - this unit teaches how to use the Global Security Kit (GSKit) to manage key files and generate certificates.
