IBM Response to Oracle’s Edison Report January, 2007

In December 2006, Oracle published a report entitled "Comparative Management Cost Study: Oracle Database 10g Release 2 and IBM DB2 Universal Database 9.1” authored by The Edison Group Inc, claiming that database administrators can perform administrative tasks in 38% less time requiring 35% fewer steps compared to IBM DB2 9.1 (DB2)1. This is the 3rd in a series of management comparisons from Oracle. The first report was written by Rauch Associates while a previous study from The Edison Group compared Oracle 10g R1 to DB2 8.2. In the previous reports there was no communication with IBM prior to publishing the report. In this study IBM proactively contacted The Edison Group to try to clarify the large number of inaccuracies in the previous reports. Although Edison responded several times to our inquiries and in fact asked questions on the proper use of DB2, the final published paper did not take into account the guidance we provided.
