Paving the way forward - the business value justification of moving to DB2 UDB for z/OS Version 8

In March of this year, IBM announced the General Availability of DB2® UDB for z/OS Version 8. This was our most robust release to date, and it provided customers with 64-bit exploitation of the IBM zSeries® architecture. Customers are now in the process of evaluating this latest version, and part of that process is calculating the business value justification that their companies will derive.

In this issue of The Mainstream, we are featuring a comprehensive set of resources to help you digest the giant leaps in technology which DB2 for z/OS Version 8.1 now offers. Read our feature article, DB2 Version 8: Worthy of the Hype for an update. Then download the newly published report from Julian Stuhler, a DB2 Specialist and IBM Gold Consultant from Triton Consulting, entitled: "DB2 for z/OS Version 8.1 - Driving Business Value." This is a both a comprehensive and detailed paper that takes the technical capabilities of DB2 for z/OS V8, and equates them to cross industry business values, along with the ROI, that all companies can expect to obtain. This paper shows in a methodical fashion how businesses can easily calculate the savings they will appreciate by migrating to DB2 V8.

And lastly, tune ito the DB2 UDB for z/OS Version 8 Webcast replay featuring Julian Stuhler and Malcolm Nolan, Marketing Manager for: DB2 for z/OS, QMF. Initially broadcast on August 31, 2004, the Webcast was attended by more than 1200 participants. Don't miss the replay.

Feature articlesDriving Business Value
Companies can do business faster and cheaper when leveraging Information Technology (IT) to automate their business processes. These IT systems each offer discrete services or functionality of particular business value; however, in order for other internal or external systems to have access to these services, the respective systems first need to be integrated. The goal of the integration architect is to achieve the most efficient means of leveraging the organization's IT systems to either create or reuse existing system interfaces when integrating with other system interfaces. Read the complete article here.

An extreme journey of rapid evolution
A wise man once said, "That which does not evolve will surely decline." IBM sought the need four years ago to take a major set of steps around the zSeries: renaming the mainframe platform; changing the pricing model to move to a more flexible on demand workload license charging model; reinvigorate the operating system from a technology perspective in order to drive it forward; and also change the middleware, so that it was more related to distributed middleware, and much more open in terms of the way that the middleware participates with open standards. IBM encourages you to take a look at your IT environment and ask yourself: Is your platform ready for on demand? Read the complete article here.

Leading the evolution to on demand banking
IT executives in the banking industry are seeking the inherent strengths of the mainframe built specifically for on demand banking. Your customers want dependable services that allow them to get the most out of their business relationship with you. In the same way, your organization should be getting the most from your investments of capital, time and personnel. IBM zSeries offers a powerful platform for on demand banking — a platform on which many institutions are relying on 99.999 percent availability, fortress-like security and performance under extremely demanding conditions. Keep your IT environment flexible, integrated and supported with the latest enabling technologies. Read the article here. Read the complete article here.

IBM broadens its application lifecycle support for on demand applications
IBM broadens its support for on demand applications with additional support for the application lifecycle and the developer community. This support provides for the delivery of mixed workload applications that will be deployed across multiple platforms, including zSeries. Read the complete article here.

Moving beyond data center crisis management to end-to-end infrastructure transaction management
By monitoring business transactions—instead of specific technologies—you are able to identify potential problems and address them before they impact customers, rather than reacting to problems after unhappy customers call about them. Read the complete article here.

Enterprise Transformation: Three scenarios for choosing retooling over rebuilding
IBM® Business Integration Reference Architecture is the technical framework for enterprise transformation. By making it possible for software to be delivered as reusable, shareable services, this architecture provides companies the ability to bridge disparate systems spread across the entire enterprise. Read three stories illustrating how IBM Business Integration Reference Architecture can be used to leverage and extend existing mainframe software and create new business value-without requiring a complete system overhaul. Integration & modernization — Achieving business flexibility
New analyst report
Resurgent zSeries Mainframe Stakes Powerful Claim for Expanded Role
Control rising costs. Deliver customer confidence with bullet-proof security. Speed up time to value. Reuse existing data and applications more efficiently. Maximize productivity of resources. Make progress on any one of these imperatives today, and you're ahead of the game. Leap forward on several at once — which you can with the new IBM zSeries Application Assist Processor (zAAP) — and you'll be way out in front. Making decisions about balancing business requirements and IT resources has never been easy. The pressure is rising and the stakes are high. The new Software Strategies' report, Resurgent zSeries Mainframe Stakes Powerful Claim for Expanded Role proposes a rigorous and accurate approach for comparing, costing and selecting an on demand enterprise IT platform.

Take a closer look at the criteria for new enterprise application platform selection. Download the new Software Strategies' report today.

Enterprise transformation tools
This week we've got an exciting new Enterprise Transformation partner-tools integration story for the WebSphere Studio Asset Analyzer. WSAA enables the discovery of software assets on zSeries, which can then be (1) exposed, reused, and managed as part of a portfolio (with Flashline's Registry); or (2) refactored, componentized or otherwise transformed (with Relativity's Modernization Workbench).

Flashline and Relativity both put out press releases, and Dale Vecchio at Gartner was very positive. He gave quotations for both press releases. Flashline said, "It was the most positive analyst meeting we can recall."

"Finally, enterprises can unlock doors of their legacy temple," states Charles Stack, CEO, Flashline. "Exposing S/390-based assets to distributed development teams dramatically increases the value of the software assets under management, encourages reuse and allows for faster, more nimble development cycles."

"Application modernization decisions require a level of understanding that, historically, most organizations have been unwilling or unable to develop," said Dale Vecchio, research director with Gartner. "Developing the information to make the decision and creating the information to execute the decision are two different, but equally important steps. Both are needed to successfully modernize an application portfolio."

This integration is available now. We've released a WSAA PTF with a preview of a Web services-based API for metadata exchange, which we will enhance and make public in WSAA V4.1 in March 05 and further extended to WSED and (we hope) other partners and IBM products.
