Application Workload Modeler

Features and benefits

Application Workload Modeler can help you answer the following types of questions:

  • Are our TCP/IP and SNA networks meeting our committed Service Level Agreements?
  • Will consolidating functions onto zSeries improve response time?
  • What's the real cause of the congestion we are experiencing: the application or the network?
  • What is the most cost effective way to analyze our network performance before and after network infrastructure changes?
  • When migrating from 374x NCP's, how can we analyze the implications of protocol, connectivity, and security decisions?
  • What are the performance implications of migrating from ESCON to OSA-Express, SNA to Enterprise Extender, or implementing SSL?

Features of Application Workload Modeler:

  • Two modes of operation:
    • Client/Server mode alllows you to evaluate the performance of your communications stack (such as TCP/IP or SNA) and your network infrastructure by modeling the behavior of an application and generating the associated network traffic between AWM instances on both the client and server.  The real application need not be installed on either end.

    • Application Client mode allows you to measure the overall end-to-end performance of a well-known TCP/IP application server, such as FTP, Web, or TN3270.  By using AWM as a client to an existing application server, AWM will generate large volumes of real traffic, as specified by you, to the application server and measure performance based on throughput and response times for the workload.
  • Control multiple nodes from a single point
    • Simulate large numbers of clients and stress workload levels from a single host or from several hosts.
    • When several hosts are used, a single AWM instance is designated as the controller.
    • The controller coordinates the set-up and execution of the test and gathers results for all AWM client and server instances involved in the test.
  • Flexibility with cross platform support
    • AWM clients and servers are supported on z/OS, OS/390 (V2R10), Linux on zSeries, and Linux.
    • Any combination of platforms may be chosen for client and server.
    • AWM clients can interact with well-known TCP/IP application servers running on any platform.  Only the AWM client must be on a platform supported by AWM.
  • Generate comprehensive analysis data
    • Data gathered includes detailed statistics describing throughput levels, response times, response time variance, and standard deviation metrics.
    • Statistics can be viewed during the test and in final reports.
    • Reports include statistics for each AWM instance as well as aggregate data for the overall test.
