 | OpenDocument Format (ODF) is an XML-based document file format for saving and interchanging editable office documents, spreadsheets, charts, and presentations. ODF is an application-independent file format created by the the OpenDocument Format Technical Committee within the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Systems (OASIS) standards organization.
Adopting ODF supporting applications in your business or service means you are not required to purchase an application from a single vendor in order to share and communicate your document data. You now have a choice.
ODF is:
- An XML-based specification describing the content and formatting of a document
- The open standard developed by a multi-vendor committee at OASIS and submitted to ISO for certification
- The standard that meets the common test for openness, including IBM's
- The default format in Open Office and IBM Workplace Managed Client
- The open standard adopted by many vendors
- The option that gives you the most choice for interoperability and future-proofing your information
ODF is important and valuable because it:
- Provides greater choice, greater freedom of action, greater cost effectiveness, greater access to innovation and greater control over the use of your documents and the intellectual property contained therein
- Enables efficient interchange of information between various parts of an organization and between organizations
- Unleashes a tremendous potential for technological innovation to promote organizational productivity and creativity
- Promotes value, flowing out of traditional office suites to suppliers of new innovative organizational productivity and creativity tools
Organizations outside of ODF dedicated to communicating the value, technology, and adoption of the standard include:
- ODF Alliance, an organization that is focused on promoting and advancing the use of ODF
- The OASIS ODF Adoption Committee, which is working to produce educational materials for developers and ISVs to accelerate ODF implementations for industries and individuals
- The ODF Fellowship, a community supporting knowledge and awareness of ODF and its importance
The IBM Workplace Managed Client includes office productivity editors which can be used to create, edit, and share a variety of document types including word processing documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. The IBM Workplace Managed Client version 2.6 productivity editors support the ODF file formats. |
