IBM® Lotus® Notes and Domino® 8 software offers improved openness and interoperability over prior releases, including integration with other IBM software products. With Lotus Notes and Domino 8 software, you can get the power of an entire portfolio of proven collaboration solutions working together in a single user interface.

Limited entitlements to IBM WebSphere® Application Server software, IBM WebSphere Portal software, IBM Tivoli Directory Integrator software, IBM DB2® software, IBM Lotus Expeditor software, and IBM Lotus Sametime software --as they relate to integration with and support for IBM Lotus Notes and Domino 8 -- are all optional extras you can choose to deploy.

Customers using IBM Lotus Sametime, IBM Lotus Quickr, and IBM Lotus Connections Activities can also plug these applications into the new Lotus Notes 8 sidebar for easy access right from within Lotus Notes. That means you spend less time flipping between windows and more time being productive.

Web services capabilities

As a Web services consumer and provider, IBM Lotus Notes and Domino 8 software provides a standard method of communication between diverse software applications running on different platforms. Applications running on the Lotus Domino server, and the Lotus Notes client, are able to "call" Web services hosted on other platforms. As a result, you get the supporting technologies you need to make use of functions and data on other systems, allowing your company to make the most of its IT investments.

General availability of support for DB2 alternate data store

Lotus Domino 8 software provides for an option to use DB2 software as an alternate data store, rather than the traditional Lotus Notes storage facility (NSF). This allows you to take advantage of new relational database capabilities by easily building applications that blend collaborative services with SQL-based relational data stored in DB2 databases.

Integration with WebSphere software

WebSphere Portal software helps companies bring together corporate applications, documents, databases, and other enterprise information into a single, integrated browser experience. Lotus Domino 8 software includes limited entitlement to WebSphere Portal, providing customers with the option to access Lotus Notes 8 composite applications from a browser. This enables a new level of collaboration between an organization's internal resources and external communities (customers, contractors and partners).
