Q. What is IBM Lotus Domino software?
A. IBM Lotus Domino is server software that provides enterprise-grade collaboration capabilities across a wide range of uses and applications. Lotus Domino can be deployed as core e-mail and enterprise scheduling infrastructure, as a custom application platform, or both.
Q. What is the difference between IBM Lotus Domino software and IBM Lotus Notes software?
A. IBM Lotus Domino is server software that runs on a variety of operating systems, available through various licensing options and offerings. IBM Lotus Notes® is workstation (client) software that provides an individual user with an integrated collaborative environment. Lotus Notes is one of several client options for users to access the messaging and collaboration capabilities of the Lotus Domino server software.
Q. What is IBM Lotus Domino Express software?
A. IBM Lotus Domino Express is a set of IBM messaging and collaboration offerings for companies with up to 1000 employees to acquire, deploy and use the capabilities of Lotus Notes and Domino that are most applicable to the needs of small and mid-sized businesses. Lotus Domino Express offerings are packaged and priced to provide cost-effective functionality with simplified licensing and reduced administration requirements. License restrictions remove selected Lotus Notes and Domino elements and attributes that are designed for larger enterprises. Otherwise, the capabilities of Lotus Domino server software and the server component of the Lotus Domino Express offerings are the same.
Q. What are the Lotus Domino and Lotus Domino Express license types?
A. Three Lotus Domino Server license types are available to organizations of all sizes: IBM Lotus Domino Messaging Server (messaging only), IBM Lotus Domino Utility Server (applications only), and IBM Lotus Domino Enterprise Server (both messaging and applications).
Three IBM Lotus Domino Express offerings are available to companies with 1000 employees or fewer: IBM Lotus Domino Messaging Express (messaging only, licensed per user), IBM Lotus Domino Utility Server Express (applications only), and IBM Lotus Domino Collaboration Express (messaging and applications, licensed per user).
Q. What does an IBM Lotus Domino Messaging Server license include?
A. Lotus Domino Messaging Server software includes the following capabilities, designed for the company that requires only messaging.
- e-mail, calendar and scheduling
- Personal information management (PIM) functions, including personal directory and personal journal
- Discussion databases
- Reference databases with basic workflow for document review
- Blog and RSS templates
- Lotus Domino partitioning (the capability to run more than one instance of Lotus Domino on the same machine using one copy of the Lotus Domino code)
Q. What does an IBM Lotus Domino Enterprise Server license include?
A. Lotus Domino Enterprise Server software includes the following capabilities, designed to extend return on investment by including the business benefit of Lotus Domino applications, and is designed for environments requiring high availability.
- e-mail, calendar and scheduling
- PIM functions (contacts and personal journal)
- Discussion databases
- Teamrooms
- Reference databases with basic workflow for document review
- Blog and RSS templates
- Access to collaborative applications developed in-house using IBM Lotus Domino Designer (a separate product) or by an IBM Business Partner
- Authenticated access* requires the user to have a client access license (CAL).
- For anonymous access, a CAL is not required.
- Lotus Domino partitioning (the capability to run more than one instance of Lotus Domino on the same machine using one copy of the Lotus Domino code)
- Lotus Domino clustering for failover and load balancing
- Authentication is involved whenever the application requires secure validation of a user's unique identity.
Q. What does an IBM Lotus Domino Utility Server license include?
A. Lotus Domino Utility Server software includes the following capabilities, designed for collaborative applications where the number of users is high or difficult to track (for example, a Web application for customer self-service).
Access to non-mail collaborative applications
Use of individual mail files is not allowed.
Client access licenses are not required for Web browser access to non-mail applications, even when user authentication is involved.
Access from a Lotus Notes client is allowed, but the Lotus Notes software and client access license must be acquired separately.
Lotus Domino partitioning (the capability to run more than one instance of Lotus Domino on the same machine using one copy of the Lotus Domino code)
Lotus Domino clustering for failover and load balancing
Q. What factors determine the number of Lotus Domino server licenses I need?
A. The required number of Lotus Domino server licenses is equal to the total number of processor value units associated with the physically available and active capacity of the machine(s) on which the software is installed. Effective 14 August 2007, sub-capacity licensing is an option for acquiring and deploying eligible Lotus Domino software. Sub-capacity licensing allows you to license software for use on less than the full processor core capacity of your machine - when the software program is used within one or more partitions using a supported partitioning technology.
For more details about sub-capacity licensing, see the sub-capacity page on the IBM Passport Advantage Web site or consult your IBM sales representative or IBM Business Partner.
Q. I have Lotus Domino software installed on machines used only for emergency backup. Must I have licenses equivalent to the total processor value units for those machines as well?
A. If the Lotus Domino server software is installed on a machine for emergency backup purposes only and either (1) has not been started (cold backup) or (2) started but sitting idle (warm backup) and not doing work of any kind, there is no requirement to pay a license charge. Note that a scheduled hardware outage, such as preventive maintenance, installation of upgrades, or switching to a larger capacity machine during peak periods, is not considered a backup situation.
The following are examples of situations (not an exhaustive list) in which the software is considered to be "doing work" and would require Lotus Domino server licenses:
High availability configuration (for example, clustering or replication) even if the server is not being accessed by users Development, program maintenance or testing
Q: Which Lotus Domino server license type do I need for a Web site based on Lotus Domino technology?
A. Lotus Domino Enterprise Server and Lotus Domino Utility Server each support anonymous access to applications. If the application requires authentication, Lotus Domino Enterprise Server supports access by users who have Lotus Notes for Collaboration or Lotus Domino Web Access for Collaboration client access licenses (CALs). Authentication is involved whenever the application requires secure validation of a user's unique identity.
Lotus Domino Utility Server licenses support unrestricted access to non-mail applications by Web browser users, whether or not the application requires authentication. Access from a Lotus Notes client is allowed, but requires a Lotus Notes for Collaboration CAL acquired separately.
Q. Is my company entitled to use Lotus Domino Utility Server software to provide application hosting services for other companies?
A. Yes, with an appropriate xSP licensing addendum. Alternatively, other companies may acquire their own Lotus Domino Utility server licenses equal to the number of processor value units associated with the machine(s) on which you will deploy the software. One company acquiring Lotus Domino licenses and then sub-licensing is not allowed. The individual companies must each have their own licenses.
Q. I have deployed Lotus Domino Messaging Server software. How may I add entitlement for applications?
A. You may trade up your Lotus Domino Messaging Server licenses to Lotus Domino Enterprise Server, and trade up your messaging-only client licenses to collaboration client licenses. IBM offers in-family tradeup part numbers to make this easy and cost-effective. Tradeup pricing is generally lower than the difference between current prices of the existing and new licenses.
Alternatively or additionally, you may consider adding Lotus Domino Utility Server licenses if you want to extend the reach of authenticated access to non-mail applications to Web browser users (inside the company, external or both) - without the need for additional client access licenses. If your existing users want to be able to access applications using their Lotus Notes client software instead of a Web browser, they would need to upgrade their CALs to Lotus Notes for Collaboration.
Q. If I choose to add Lotus Domino Utility Server licenses, would I need to install another copy of Lotus Domino code on another machine?
A. You are allowed to deploy multiple server types on the same hardware, provided that your existing machine has adequate capacity to support the desired number of users in the new environment that adds non-mail applications. You can acquire more than one license type for the same hardware and the same copy of the code. The functions you are allowed to use and the entitlements that you have are determined by the type of license or combination of licenses that you acquire.
Q. I have deployed Lotus Domino Messaging Server software. How may I add entitlement to use clustering capability?
A. You may trade up your Lotus Domino Messaging Server licenses to Lotus Domino Enterprise Server. Please note that this is the only tradeup option available for Lotus Domino server licenses.
Q: Which Lotus Domino server license do I need for a passthru server, administration hub or gateway? The machine is not running either mail or collaborative applications.
A. For instances in which the machine is really just performing an administration function, Lotus Domino Messaging Server licenses are sufficient. But if you need clustering support, you will need Lotus Domino Enterprise Server. In either case, you will need licenses equivalent to the number of processor value units associated with the machine.
