IBM ALCS Education

Class Title: ALCS V2.3.1 Concepts and Programming Class

Overview: This classroom course is designed to provide fundamental knowledge of the concepts of ALCS and the facilities available to applications.

Audience: Experienced data processing professionals who are responsible for implementing and supporting ALCS systems and developing ALCS applications should attend this course. It is also suitable for TPF and ALCS application programmers who require an understanding of ALCS concepts and facilities.

Topics: This course will provide the students with an introduction to ALCS application programming, and the development and testing environment. The topics covered include:

  • ALCS System Overview
  • General Programming Macros
  • Database
  • Communications
  • Global Records
  • Sequential Files
  • Application Development Facilities

Educational Objectives: Upon completion of this course, using all available documentation, each student should be able to:

  • Describe the major components of the ALCS system
  • Write code that manages ALCS Entries
  • Write code that manages ALCS Storage
  • Write code to access the ALCS Global Area
  • Describe and use ALCS general programming macros
  • Describe how ALCS manages the data base
  • Write code to access the ALCS database, or a DB2 relational database
  • Describe how ALCS manages sequential files
  • Write code to access sequential files
  • Describe how ALCS manages its communication network, and write code that interfaces with communication resources
  • Use the ALCS facilities for application testing and problem determination

    Prerequisites: Course participants require a knowledge of IBM System/390 architecture, assembler language and communications concepts. A knowledge of at least one S/390 operating system (TPF or MVS) is also desirable.
