Interview and Test

Once you assemble the potential localization vendors, the final step is to interview and test them. Use the attached questionnaire as a guideline for your interviews. Ideally, you want to interview the manager and project managers you will be working with. You want to get a feel for the person/company. How long have they worked at their present company? What is the turnover of the company? What is their localization philosophy/process? What are their success stories? You also need to check professional references thoroughly.

When testing the vendors, there are several important components. Choose a challenging extract from your software/documentation, not to exceed 750 words. Provide a ‘timed’ test of X amount of hours, to best simulate actual work conditions. Get the names and profiles of the linguists taking the tests. If they score well, moving forward, insist on using only these tested resources.

Choosing a localization vendor is also a ‘chemistry’ fit. Do you trust the people? Do they have integrity? Will they be able to work with my team? In the end, it is people working with people. There are certain intangibles, hard to quantify, so you ‘go with your gut’ or intuition.
