| We have discussed why unstructured information management applications present an important business opportunity, along with some of the problems language engineering solves, and why linguistic solutions are generally preferable to non-linguistic alternatives. The rest of this article focuses on IBM LanguageWare v3, codenamed Frost. LanguageWare is the new generation IBM linguistic platform and was designed from the ground up to address the complexity and costs posed by the need to develop global applications.
In designing LanguageWare, we completely rethought traditional software architecture for language engineering. Our vision was to create a new linguistic solution that was fast, flexible, extensible, cost-effective to develop and maintain, globalization-friendly, and easy to integrate. It was to be a key piece of enabling technology that would give IBM a strategic edge in the area of UIM. |
