In January 2002, twelve European countries collectively known as the Euro-zone - Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain - converted their national currencies to the euro, a single currency. Of the 15 European Union member countries, Denmark, Sweden, and the United Kingdom have not adopted the euro.
Other territories in Europe that have special relationships with the European Union have also switched their currencies to the euro, including the Vatican City, Monaco, Andorra, San Marino, and Liechtenstein.
Hardware and software such as keyboards, operating systems, Web browsers, collaborative software, fonts, and many other applications throughout the industry had to be updated to support the euro currency symbol and processing requirements. IBM products produced for European Union countries after January 1999 are EuroReady. |
