In the virtual world of Eternal Egypt, an interactive Web site launched in February 2004, the Sphinx’s nose is still intact, King Tut’s tomb looks like when it was first discovered in 1922, while five millennia of history scroll past your eyes with historical and audiovisual content in Arabic, English and French. Dubbed “a museum without walls”, the Eternal Egypt project was the brainchild of the IBM e-Business Innovation Centre in Chicago and the Cairo Museum. IBM France Translation Services Center (TSC) has been selected to provide translation of the written and audiovisual content developed by the Cairo Museum. The unique translation tools and processes deployed by the TSC helped IBM and the client realize significant productivity gains and cost savings. Also the strict adherence to aggressive deadlines and the world-class translation, terminology and project management disciplines so unique to IBM TSCs were instrumental in the timely launch of the first phase of a three-year project. Once completed, this venture will be one of the most important Web sites for people’s cultural heritage in the world.
