FAQ -- Lotus® Domino™ Global WorkBench

Here are questions we've been asked about using Lotus Domino Global WorkBench to develop globalized Web sites. You can also view the original topic.

Q: What is a Domino-based multilingual Web site?
A:
It is a site available in more than one language, developed with the best-of-breed tools, Domino Designer 6 and Domino Global WorkBench 6. The site can be composed of several unilingual databases (one language per database), several multilingual database (more than one language per database) or any combination of several unilingual and multilingual databases.

Q: Can I synchronize a Domino Web site comprising a mix of unilingual and multilingual databases?
A:
Yes. However, in a multilingual database users will need to go to the client to manually switch to the preferred language. The Language Switchbar is not supported in a multilingual database. To switch language in a multilingual database on the Web, you need to modify the user's preferred language at the client level (Notes 6 or any Browser supporting this feature i.e. Netscape Communicator  4.x and higher or Microsoft IE 4.x and higher

Q: Can I use multilingual applications from a browser?
A:
Yes, Domino's multilingual features support the Accept_Language feature of HTTP For multilingual databases built with DGW, Domino will serve the correct language document to the browser based on the Browsers language setting. Similarly, Lotus Notes 6 User Preferences has an option to select the preferred language you want to access on the International setting panel. This is possible because the Domino Designer 6 and the Domino Server 6 now support and recognize multilingual design elements. This feature does not work with Notes 4.6.

Q.: Can DGW handle, LotusScript or HTML?
A:
Yes. All user visible elements (error messages, text for dialog boxes etc.) can now be localized using DGW.

Q: What language does my original application need to be in?
A:
The original application can be developed in any language supported by Domino Designer 6.

Q: What platforms are supported by Domino Global WorkBench?
A:
DGW itself will run on Windows 32. Applications generated by DGW can be accessed by any Notes Client 6 platforms or any Web Browser.

Q: If I create multiple single-language databases how do I keep my Web site content document in synch?
A:
By setting the Synchronizer server task to run periodically, the system will ensure that new documents appear in all your language databases and will trigger a translation workflow.

Q: What is the Synchronizer?
A:
The Synchronizer is a Domino server task that synchronizes document across languages in a global e-business application. When you build language databases to create your global site, you can choose to add synchronization features to your databases. These will help you to manage documents across multiple languages by reflecting changes made in one document across all supported languages. For example, when a document is created in one language in a Web site database, the Synchronizer can automatically create a copy in other languages ready for translation. A Synchronizer report database records information about the state of synchronization across a web site and provides reports on databases and documents set up for synchronization.

Q: What is the Language SwitchBar?
A:
A Language SwitchBar can be added to synchronized unilingual databases. It is appended to each form in the built database, and allows users to view documents in other languages (provided the documents have been translated in the chosen languages).

Q: Does the Language SwitchBar work in Multilingual databases?
A:
No. Only on sites using a set of multiple unilingual databases

Q: How do I know when there is new content to be translated once the application is live?
A:
Workflow, once set-up, will inform you by mail when new documents are entered into the Web site and when existing documents, that require translation, have been modified

Q: How do I manage the translation of the Web content?
A:
DGW 6 ships with a Translation Workflow application, connected to the Synchronizer server task. It tracks translatable documents informs the relevant parties when an action is required e.g. translation, by pointing them to where the work is that needs to be done and providing a review process for the Web site content, before it is displayed on the Web. You can also create your own translation process workflow, connected it to the Synchronizer

Q: What is the Translation Workflow application?
A:
The Translation Workflow application handles the translation of documents in synchronized databases. You specify the steps for your translation process and name the users who are to carry out the various tasks. Workflow guides each new translatable document through the translation process, alerting the relevant people by mail at the conclusion of each step.

Q: How can I keep track of my Web content?
A:
The Translation Workflow application allow you to monitor your Web site and provide statistics on Local and Global documents. It will also show you the status of translation across your Web site.
