Why IBM Informix for Linux
About Informix supported Linux distributions

The freedom of Linux®. The power of Informix®. Bring them together, and you have a flexible, scalable database solution that lets you get more done — faster than ever before. IBM Informix software lets you build and manage applications of any size, with enterprise-class availability and reliability. Optimized for Web applications, it handles multimedia as well as conventional data — at a low cost.

Our history of support for Linux is long-standing — starting with Informix Dynamic Server (IDS), version 7.31.UC5 — and we have continued to enhance our products and tools with features designed to exploit the benefits of Linux. IDS 9.4 was the first IBM database engine to fully exploit the large-memory, 64-bit capabilities of the Linux Kernel on zSeries — providing an excellent upgrade path for clients who need a high-performance, Internet-scalable information management system.

Today we offer Informix products and tools for Linux on IBM eServer™ zSeries®. In addition, IDS and Informix Client Software Development Kit (CSDK) are available for 64-bit Linux on IBM eServer zSeries and Intel Itanium processors.

Why IBM Informix for Linux?

Here's why IBM Informix and Linux make such a powerful combination:

  • Flexibility. Our commitment to open standards combined with the implementation of Linux and IBM software across heterogeneous platforms means you can choose the best hardware and software for each task, and easily integrate new applications with existing systems.

  • Reliability. Both IBM Informix and Linux have already proven their scalability and availability in real customer environments. Together they can enable your total solution to be more robust, while increasing productivity and improving customer responsiveness.

  • Cost effectiveness. The combination of Linux and IBM Informix can help contain and reduce your IT costs in a variety of ways — from lower operating system software costs and better distributed systems management to more flexible hardware choices.

About Informix supported Linux distributions

The Linux distributions supported by IBM Informix products are listed in the table for each product. (Select the desired product tab at the top of this page.)

  • Only the Linux distributions listed in the following product tables are supported. If you are running an IBM Informix product on a Linux distribution not listed here, it is not a supported environment.

  • The kernel levels listed in our product tables are base/default kernel levels. Kernel updates provided by the Linux distribution vendor are also supported, unless otherwise stated in the Comments section of the table. For example: If the kernel level listed is 2.4.21-7, and you upgrade your system so that the kernel level becomes 2.4.21-10, it is also supported. Major kernel upgrades (for example, an upgrade from 2.4.9 to 2.4.21) and glibc upgrades (for example, an upgrade from 2.2.5 to 2.3) require validation and will be listed accordingly. Updates or service packs provided by Linux vendors fall into this category.

  • The fixpack level that is supported in the distribution will be indicated in the product tables.

  • If you cannot find an answer to your question about what is supported, please contact us.

  • Any customer with a valid IBM maintenance contract — running Informix products on Linux (on a supported distribution) — should contact IBM for support if they have an issue that prevents the smooth operation of their Informix implementation. IBM will diagnose the issue. If IBM support determines the problem is related to OS/IDS compatibility issues, we work with the operating system (OS) partner in cases where the operating system is suspected of causing the issue. Should IBM Support or engineering determine that the problem is related to the customer implementation of the OS, such as the configuration or hardware compatibility issues, the customer will need to work directly with the OS vendor.

  • For support of Linux on other platforms, please contact your IBM sales representative.
