IBM IDS 9.4 is the database management system that delivers superior application performance for transaction intensive environments and offers the following advantages for successful on demand businesses.
Flexibility for managing change
Meeting the requirements of an on demand IT environment, IDS 9.4 delivers enhanced flexibility that includes:
- A standard, open architecture that integrates smoothly with third-party applications — supported by major application vendors such as SAP, PeopleSoft, Baan, Lawson and Business Objects.
- Tape utilities to make maximum use of backup media.
- Enhanced support of industry-standard SQL and continued support of the latest standards, like Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) and Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) — for easier application development.
- A set of industry-standard security mechanisms — including roles, UNIX password-based authentication and database management system schema authorizations.
- IBM Business Partners support for publishing applications in virtually any language and creating multinational applications.
High performance
With version 9.4, Informix Dynamic Server exceeds its already high online transition processing (OLTP) performance by 8 to 15 percent -- compared with any previous Informix Dynamic Server release — with more efficient use of large amounts of memory and even less contention between concurrent users.
- Optimal engine performance
- Recognizes and stores standard character- and numeric-based information
- Smarter query optimization
Streamlined, easy administration
By eliminating, simplifying and automating many tasks typically associated with an enterprise-class database, IDS 9.4 helps reduce the complexity, time,
database administrator skills and cost associated with database management. A browser-based interface — Informix Server Administrator (ISA) — allows all common database administrator activities to be administered from anywhere on the network.
- Allows dynamic adjustments to core engine operating parameters — without degrading performance or increasing hardware requirements.
- Supports the use of today's large disk drives.
- Eases administration overhead by significantly reducing the number of objects managed by a database administrator.
- Tools to help a small number of administrators manage a large number of systems.
Scalable and reliable
IDS version 9.4 eliminates most of the previous data size limitations. One example of the enhanced scalability is the maximum-size increase of an Informix Dynamic Server instance — from 4 terabytes to 128 petabytes.
By enabling hot standby for catastrophic failover to work for all data types, IDS 9.4 helps ensure optimal data availability for mission-critical applications.
- Co-existence of high-availability data replication and enterprise replication
- Large engine capability (chunk size, data capacity)
- Dynamic scalable architecture (DSA)
Technology to extend the database
IBM Informix DataBlade technology brings additional business functionality to IDS 9.4.
- Specialized, user-defined data types, routines and access methods provide the capability to effectively manage all types of data — including text, images, sound, video, time series and spatial.
- DataBlade modules to extend the database so that complex objects — images, formatted documents, time-series video images and information HTML pages — can be stored, indexed and accessed directly in the database.
Assured compatibility
By certifying Informix Dynamic Server with DB2® Information Integrator, DB2 Content Manager, WebSphere® integration middleware and Tivoli® systems
management software, IBM helps to ensure fast, efficient application development and distribution on a robust and scalable platform.

Simple upgrade process
IBM supports Informix Dynamic Server with two major versions: IDS v7 (latest and final release is 7.31) and IDS v9 (current release is 9.4). With the
ability to upgrade the Informix Dynamic Server engine in minutes, transitioning from version 7 to version 9 is a simple, highly automated process.
After performing testing and backup tasks, database and system administrators can shut down the database engine and restart it quickly to take advantage of the host of new features available in IDS 9.4. Standard upgrade testing and tuning are also recommended.
