Visit the new DB2 on Campus Community Web site!

The DB2 on Campus community, formed by students and teachers who participated in the DB2 on Campus program worldwide, have created a neat Web site: www.db2oncampus.org

The plan the community has for this site is to offer a free online test (Under construction) based on the "Getting Started with DB2 Express-C" book. Passing this test will grant you a "DB2 on Campus Community Qualification" which can help you attest your skills about DB2.

Participate in the DB2 on Campus blog

We have just started a new blog for the DB2 on Campus program: http://db2oncampus.wordpress.com/
As the program grows we decided to create our own blog instead of using the DB2 Express-C team blog. Please send a note to db2univ@ca.ibm.com if you would like to be a contributor!

DB2 on Campus program redesigned in 2008

For 2008, the technical presentation "Web 2.0 and DB2 demos" is used to introduce DB2 to students, teachers, and members of the open source community. In addition the program is encouraging the introduction of DB2 in the university curriculum through the "IBM Academic Qualification" program.

The DB2 on Campus program has also extended its software coverage. In addition to DB2 Express-C, the program now promotes the use of Rational Data Architect (A data modeling and design tool), and IBM Data Studio (a full lifecycle data management solution for database application development and management).

The DB2 on Campus speeches/courses are now on video!

The DB2 on Campus speeches and workshops have been converted to e-learning format. There are 24 videos in www.channeldb2.com/oncampus that cover most of the DB2 on Campus material. You can listen to these videos having the free online DB2 Express-C book by your side. The material in the videos and the book is very similar, and the exercises are also the same.

DB2 on Campus tour results for 2007

The DB2 on Campus tour ended in Peru on December of 2007. Since March of 2007, the program was able to reach almost 10,000 students and 300 teachers worldwide. In addition, 70 students were selected as DB2 Student Ambassadors. The program was replicated by local IBM employees in Malaysia and Vietnam, and by DB2 student ambassadors in Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, and Italy. The tour will continue in 2008, but at the same time the speeches and courses have been converted to videos!. Check out ChannelDB2.com (www.channeldb2.com/oncampus) for details.

A successful Italian tour ends with excellent results.

From November 12th to November 23rd of 2007, Raul Chong visited 11 universities and delivered 15 speeches/courses in 12 days all over Italy. It was a very tight but successful visit, reaching students from universities in the North, Center and South of Italy. The total attendance was approximately 750 students and teachers. Several teachers were interested about DB2’s pureXML technology which they mention would explore in more detail, so they could add topics about it in their courses. A few teachers will add the free DB2 Express-C online book as part of the resources to read in their courses. The visit also opened opportunities for universities to use DB2 as part of their own internal administration systems. Overall a tight but very successful 3rd visit to Italy!

Miguel Angel Garcia Trujillo
I'm very happy to be part of the DB2 on campus program, because it gives me the opportunity to promote it and help many students to create communities in their universities to achieve knowledge and certifications on DB2. I hope I can help many of them in this challenge. I have been working for IBM Mexico for almost 12 years as an employee and 1.5 years as a scholar (a whole life). Currently I am working as an IT Architect and Project Manager. My major is in Computer Science, and I have a master's degree on management. I'm also a certified Java programmer. I was born in Mexico and in my spare time I enjoy reading, dancing, playing basketball and going to the movies.

Andrea Rodacki
I am willing to grow the DB2 Students Ambassador Community in Brazil. I have been working in IBM as a DBA and Academic Initiative ambassador since 2006 and I am delivering DB2 Express-C lectures. I like a lot the contact with students and professors because this makes me feel as if I was back at university again. Being interested in the DB2 Students Ambassador program makes the DB2 learning process fun and entertaining. Besides my database interests, I am a swimmer and travel lover.

Follow the DB2 on Campus Tour for 2007

In the DB2 Express-C team blog, Raul F. Chong is blogging with pictures his experiences as he travels around the world visiting universities worldwide as part of the DB2 on Campus program. Check out the blog and follow him on his journey!

User Group UTN-FRRE delivers DB2 speech at a security conference

On March 10, 2007, 150 people attended the conference "2º Seminario Hacking Nea 2007" in Argentina. The members of the DB2 User Group UTN - FRRE were invited to deliver a speech about DB2 Express-C and security topics about it. Everyone attending also received a CD with the image of DB2 Express-C.

DB2 Express-C team is present at the ACM ICPC event

The DB2 Express-C team was present at the World Finals of the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) in Tokyo, March 12 - 16, 2007. We delivered demos including one on Ruby on Rails and DB2 Express-C. Ruby on Rails is an open-source framework for creating database backend web applications, and is becoming increasingly popular for Web 2.0 development. The demonstration showcased Aurora, an application builder which allows business professionals to build and secure web-based applications with little or no programming skills. Aurora was created on top of DB2 and Ruby on Rails using the Starter Toolkit for DB2 on Rails which conveniently packages Ruby, Rails, DB2 Express-C and the drivers/adapters required. The demonstration was timely, as the highlight of this ACM event was the speech from Yukihiro Matsumoto (Matz), the creator of the Ruby language.

Featured DB2 Student Ambassador gets a job!

Mario Piz, the DB2 Student Ambassador featured in the DB2 Express-C Web earlier this year, was hired to work in the IT department of a bank in his country for an internship. Mario indicated that he did not apply to the position, but that he was called for an interview because his picture and biography were posted in the DB2 Express-C web site. Being a DB2 Student Ambassador is certainly paying off for Mario. Congratulations Mario!

The DB2 on Campus tour for 2006 ended with a bang!

From May until December of 2006, Raul F. Chong, one of our DB2 Express-C community facilitators, visited 81 universities in 13 different countries, reaching almost 8000 students, teachers, and developers. Raul has been promoting the DB2 on Campus Program (formerly known as the DB2 Express-C University Program) with the support from the IBM Academic Initiative, and he has been receiving excellent feedback.

Thanks to these visits, different projects have started flourishing in different universities. For example, universities in Argentina have set up research groups to understand how to use pureXML™. In Brazil, an IBM Academic Initiative faculty award for US$12,000 was granted to the Universidade Federale do Sao Carlos. With the money, the university will set up a research laboratory using DB2. In addition, IBM employees are also replicating the program in their countries. For example, in Korea, IBM volunteers have delivered the same speech and courses with success in five different universities. Research collaboration has also been established between universites and the IBM labs. For example, the Politecnico di Milano in Italy is currently in discussions with IBM developers and architects about some new XML technology; the DB2 Express-C team helped as liason to establish this collaboration.

UFScar (Brazil) is awarded a US$12k Academic Initiative award

The Universidade Federale do Sao Carlos (UFSCar) in Brazil won an IBM Academic Initiative award worth US$12,000. The award is the result of the excellent work by the IBM Ambassadors in conjuction with the DB2 Express-C team. During 2006, the following activities were delivered which contributed to winning the award:

  • DB2 Express-C speech by Raul Chong from the IBM Toronto Lab DB2 Express-C team
  • DBA and Application Development Workshop – 16 hours course lectured by Raul Chong reaching 47 students and teachers
  • DB2 Exam 700 preparation course – 18 hours course lectured by Fabio Hasegawa, leader of the DBA team from AS Brazil
  • Donation of 2 pSeries servers and 2 personal computers to UFSCar through the Community Grant from OnDemand Community. This grant is the result of the the volunteer work done by Carlos Henrique Matos, Bruno Tavares Gregolin and Hiromiti Nakagawa.
  • Delivery of 40 DB2 Certification exams provided for free by the DB2 Express-C team.

With the money and the computers donated, the project IBM Care (IBM Center of Applied Research and Education) has been launched. Its main objectives are:

  • Provide knowledge about IBM programming tools and technologies;
  • Provide access to IBM software and skills for their effective and efficient usage;
  • Disseminate DB2 technology among the IT community in the university;
  • Improve the quality of education by matching theory and practice in Computer Science.

The IBM Care project will allow undergraduate sutdents to interact with IBM technologies (mainly DB2) and obtain deep skills required in today's job market. Students and teachers will gain access not only to hardware and software resources, but also to IBM skilled specialists. The center will not only be used to gain new DB2 skills, and prepare students to write DB2 certification exams, but also to develop research projects.

UTN-FRR successfully delivers its "SQL Tournament" using DB2 Express-C

On Saturday November 25th 2006, the DB2 User Group at the UTN-FRR university held a contest called "SQL Tournament".
