Data Encryption: Protecting Your Sensitive Database Data

Chat with the Lab - Thursday, July 10th 8 AM Pacific, 10 AM Central, 11 AM Eastern, 4 PM London, 5 PM Paris

Do you have credit card data in your databases? Personal data in your databases? Confidential business data in your databases? The pressure is on to get this sensitive data encrypted and this pressure comes from government regulations, industry mandates, or simply fear of damaging your company's reputation due to an embarrassing public disclosure about losing private data. While encryption technology has existed for some time, only now are there software solutions that provide effective protection with operational simplicity. Come join us on this call which will discuss the importance of data encryption, introduce the IBM Database Encryption Expert for DB2 and (soon) IDS, and dive into its capabilities and user experience. Our speaker for this session is Peter Mandel, Optim Product Manager for Data Governance.

All About Audit: From Auditing to Collecting to Reporting

Auditing is your authoritative record of happenings - it is important evidence that everything is running according to plan and the proof when it is not. As such, auditing database access and changes are a critical part of any data server security, privacy or compliance effort. DB2's new audit facility makes capturing these audit logs easier and more flexible then ever. But capturing the audit records is only the first step. Audit logs sitting on your database server are not useful unless someone is regularly looking at them. As an example, requirement 10.6 of the PCI standard mandates that important audit logs should be reviewed at least daily. DB2 Audit Management Expert - now available for LUW - is a tool that simplifies the collection, analysis and reporting of DB2 audit records across your systems. Come join us and hear about the importance of audit, and a deep dive into the DB2 Audit facility and DB2 Audit Management Expert for LUW. Our speakers for this session are Sal Vella, Vice President of DB2 Development for Linux, Unix and Windows and Business Intelligence and Belal Tassi, CISSP, Worldwide DB2 Technical Evangelist.

IBM Data Security Blueprint

There has been plenty of material written on the subject of database security. Unfortunately, most of these papers and presentations focus only on describing how a particular database security feature works. Customers are often left confused as to when to use what technology - and what security issues each feature is helping them tackle. This has prompted us to build the IBM Data Security Server Blueprint: an easy to use document that can greatly simplify security planning for users of DB2 and IDS data servers. The blueprint outlines the major threats to a data server, and the recommended countermeasures direct from the Lab security teams. The authors of the blueprint will discuss how it was developed, how it works, and most importantly how you can use it to help lock down your data server. Our speakers for this session will be Sal Vella, Vice President, DB2 Development for Linux, Unix and Windows and Business Intelligence; Walid Rjaibi, Security Architect and Relational Data Services Development; and Belal Tassi, WW DB2 Technical Evangelist.

DB2 9: Simplify database management with Automatic Storage (Replay)

Managing database storage can be a resource intensive and a time consuming task. The recently introduced Automatic Storage in DB2 9 represents a major leap forward. This feature can associate a set of storage paths with a database, create table spaces on these storage paths without explicitly specifying storage or containers, and let DB2 automatically extend and add containers on the fly. All these capabilities contribute to lowering the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of your database environment by substantially reducing the amount of storage administration that database administrators have to perform. This Chat with the Lab will dive into the details on Automatic Storage and the role it plays in DB2 for LUW's storage strategy.

Join Sal Vella, VP of DB2 development, Aamer Sachedina, Senior Software Engineer in DB2 Development, to learn about Automatic Storage in DB2 9, and understand how you can make your job as a DBA much easier.

DB2 9: Securing your data with Label-Based Access Control (Replay)

Securing information assets and restricting data access to only those with the need to know is becoming a significant challenge for many organizations, especially in highly classified environments such as government agencies, armed forces, healthcare institutions, etc. Label-Based Access Control (LBAC) is a new security capability in DB2 9 that allows you to control access to your data at a very granular level. With LBAC you can limit data access at the row and/or column level based on security labels. Unlike traditional implementations of mandatory access control (e.g., Multilevel Security), the DB2 LBAC capability allows you to tailor the security label definition to best suit your application specific needs. DB2 LBAC integrates well with other DB2 capabilities (like data partitioning) and can be combined with such capabilities to offer an even stronger security.

Join Sal Vella, VP of DB2 Development, and Walid Rjaibi, Senior DB2 Software Engineer - Security and Privacy, for a deep dive into the LBAC capability in DB2 9 on Linux, UNIX, and Windows.

DB2 9: Automatic Database Configuration and Memory Tuning (Replay)

IBM has been a pioneer in autonomic computing. A number of self-configuring, self-optimizing, and self-healing capabilities were introduced in the earlier DB2 releases. DB2 9 continues along this strategy of helping you derive more value from your data, while spending less time managing it. This new version contains revolutionary features like self-tuning memory and automatic configuration of newly created databases. These autonomic features are designed to make database administration effortless, improve administrator productivity, and lower ownership costs.

Join Sal Vella, VP of DB2 development, and Adam Storm, DB2 autonomic computing developer, for an in-depth look at some of the new autonomic capabilities in DB2 9.

DB2 9: Using Data Compression to Cut Costs (Replay)

Disk storage systems can often be the most expensive components of a database solution. For large warehouses or databases with huge volumes of data, the cost of the storage subsystem can easily exceed the combined cost of the hardware server and the data server software. Therefore even a small reduction in the storage subsystem can result in substantial cost savings for the entire database solution. Data row compression in DB2 9 is a remarkable new feature that can reduce storage requirements, improve I/O efficiency, and result in savings of up to 80%.

Join Sal Vella, VP of DB2 Development, Bill Minor, DB2 Development Manager, and Chris Eaton, DB2 Product Manager, to take you through a deep dive into DB2 9's compression technology and its impact for your business.

DB2 9: Range Partitioning and Large RID support (Replay)

DB2 9 contains innovative features for delivering information on demand and scaling databases to new levels. The Table (Range) Partitioning capabilities in DB2 9 provide a number of advantages including better query performance, improved large table manageability, and dynamic data roll-in/roll-out. The Large Row Identifier (RID) allows for creation of tables and indexes that are terabytes in size. Together these features enable the ability to create and easily manage databases with virtually unlimited capacity, and are especially beneficial in large data-warehousing environments.

Join Sal Vella, VP of DB2 Development, and Matt Huras, IBM Distinguished Engineer and lead DB2 Architect, for an in-depth look at the new Table Partitioning and Large RID support in DB2 9 on Linux, UNIX, and Windows.
