 | IBM CommonStore for SAP using Tivoli Storage Manager Moving old inactive data from the operational database to an external archive for occasional retrieval and long term storage is a SAP recommended method to trim the size of the R/3 database. Tivoli® Storage Manager is one of the archive options supported by CommonStore for SAP to meet SAP R/3 customer requirements for long term storage and retrieval of vital data and documents. Together, they offer: - Full SAP ArchiveLink™ functionality using the standard interface.
- Superior data management features
- a unique variety of storage devices from different suppliers plus complete control functions for tape libraries and optical jukeboxes
- Jukeboxes
- Archive servers on IBM platforms and non-IBM platforms such as HP/UX, Sun, etc.
Incoming documents such as scanned invoices can be archived and added to the SAP Business Workflow. CommonStore supports documents managed in SAPoffice including outgoing documents and print lists. All archive/retrieve functions can be directly invoked by the users from the respective SAP applications, reducing paper handling and the time to process business documents. Information needs to be stored only once and can be distributed electronically to all authorized users. CommonStore for SAP leverages the benefits of Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM)*, a powerful client/server storage management system for backup/restore in the SAP R/3 environment: - TSM backup/archive client lets you back up all files from a computer's harddisk (full), specific files (selective), or only those files that have changed since your last backup (incremental). The file compression provided on the client platforms reduces network traffic and the amount of storage required on the server to store the files.
- TSM cross user and cross platform restore offer significant flexibility.
- Cross-user restore lets you authorize someone else to restore your files.
- Cross-platform restore lets you store your files on a platform different from the platform on which it was backed up.
- TSM distribution lets authorized users access this centrally stored data. Access can be adhoc, initiated by each user, preplanned, or controlled by a workflow management system.
- TSM backup/restore uses Tivoli Data Protection for R/3 to protect against data loss by managing copies of different backup levels for restore in case of an error.
- TSM archive/retrieve stores documents which must be kept for legal or business requirements or must be accessed by many users within the workscope of R/3. Predefined Tivoli Storage Manager procedures allow a high degree of automation -- from storage hierarchy and expiration management to scheduling.
- TSM for ERP (a separate companion product) provides automated data protection, reduces the impact of data backups and restores on the R/3 server, and greatly reduces the administrator workload necessary to meet data protection requirements. TSM for ERP allows access to backed-up R/3 data after the entire set is restored, while CommonStore allows immediate access to archived data and documents at a click of a button from the existing user client interface, SAPGUI.
* TSM is separately licensed and configured. |
