CommonStore archive options

CommonStore is a middleware server between the Exchange Server mail server system and the back-end archive management system. CommonStore does not store data or document, but defines and manages what to archive, when to archive, and how to archive from the mail system to the back-end archive management system.

The back-end archive management system can be one of the following IBM repositories:

With announcement letter 206-202, a more attractive entry level price is available for customers who use Content Manager Enterprise Edition with CommonStore for Exchange Server. The minimum license requirement for Content Manager, when used with CommonStore for Exchange Server, is reduced from 20 Authorized User licenses to 5 Authorized User licenses.

CommonStore exploits all the TSM storage management capabilities. TSM is IBM's enterprise solution for managing storage and protecting data across the network from laptops to mainframes. TSM supports fast backup and recovery, nondisruptive application protection, and disk-to-disk backup. Its advanced functions provide:

  • automated, policy-based storage management together with reporting and monitoring to reduce daily management,
  • backup snapshots to reduce cost and complexity, and server sharing and
  • load balancing for self-management.

CommonStore leverages the scalability of TSM from PC servers through UNIX® and mid-range servers to OS/390® mainframe servers -- heterogeneous platform coverage for 37 different operating environments -- and supports approximately 500 storage devices.

The companion product, TSM for Mail, automates the data protection of e-mail servers running either Lotus® Domino® or Microsoft® Exchange. This module utilizes the application program interfaces (APIs) provided by e-mail application vendors to perform on-line "hot" backups without shutting down the e-mail server and improve data-restore performance. TSM for Mail protects the growing amount of new and changing data that should be securely backed-up to help maintain 24x365 application availability. TSM for Mail allows customer access to backed up e-mail after it has restored the entire set while CommonStore allows a customer immediate access to archived mail at a click of a button from existing user client interface, notes client or outlook, providing the best of both worlds.

The CommonStore solution can be extended with Content Manager or Content Manager OnDemand providing access for a user population beyond the messaging system users. The CommonStore archive for e-mail messages and documents can be accessed by any user who has rights to access, including messaging system clients, Content Manager or Content Manager OnDemand clients, Internet, and intranet users.

These same enterprise content management technologies can provide a complete content management solution for any content type -- document, Web content, image, fax, rich media - across diverse business processes and applications including Siebel, PeopleSoft, and SAP. Once deployed, the infrastructure is ready for all of these purposes, to gain time, cost savings, experience, and efficiency.
