Announcing: Workstation APL2 Version 2.0

The IBM APL Products and Services group is pleased to announce a new product, Workstation APL2 for Multiplatforms Version 2.0. Workstation APL2 continues the IBM tradition of offering unparalleled portability. Workstation APL2 runs on AIX®, Linux, Sun® Solaris®, and Windows®. Workstation APL2 is compatible with mainframe APL2 for CMS and TSO.

In addition to adding support for Linux, Workstation APL2 also includes several new features:

  • Namespaces - Namespaces enable application encapsulation reducing name conflicts and increasing code reuse. Workstation APL2 namespace support is identical to the support offered by mainframe APL2 and so allows development of applications for deployment in namespaces on any APL2 platform.
  • APL2 Runtime Library - The runtime library is a subset of Workstation APL2 which can be redistributed without charge and allows deployment of APL2 applications without requiring end-users acquire an APL2 license.
  • TCL external function - Tcl is a command language that supports a variety of extension packages including high level GUI facilities. The new TCL external function allows APL2 programs to use Tcl programs and facilities.
  • Grid control - A new grid control is available on the Windows platform. The grid control can be used to display tabular data in a familiar spreadsheet style.
  • Online PDF publications - All the APL2 manuals are now available online in PDF form.

Workstation APL2 is priced at US$1500. Volume and trade up discounts are available through Passport Advantage and eligible educators can acquire Workstation APL2 at no cost through the IBM Scholar's Program.
