Library Server for Multiplatforms

Features and benefits

IBM Library Server provides on-line reading and search capability to your company's information. It reads electronic books which provide an easy to understand and intuitive model for readers who may not be familiar with on-line viewing tools. The information is stored in a virtual library which is composed of books, shelves, bookcases and collections, and then served to standard web browsers, on either external or internal corporate networks.

Compared to the use of standard HTML and graphics files in other web libraries, the Library Server offers the advantage of a patented fuzzy, Boolean and morphological full-text searching across entire documents, shelves and bookcases (not just the currently loaded HTML file). In addition, the book's compressed file offers the capability of storing much more content in the same amount of disk space, depending on factors such as the amount of graphics and text in the content.

IBM Library Server is a replacement to the former IBM BookManager BookServer products. The new name is the result of significant changes to the function and user interface, and because it supports not only BookManager books, but also portable document format (PDF) files. Other new functions in the Library Server include:

  • Improved end user interface: Improved and expanded support for customizing and tailoring the Library Server end user interface will enable configuring Library Server installations to present an enterprise's choice of look and feel. Users will also be able to employ filtered views, navigation, and searches of books based upon topic classifications such as concept, reference, or task.
  • Enhanced shelves and bookcases: Shelf and bookcase contents will be presented as expandable/collapsible nodes, providing the ability to view book topics in the context of the books on the shelf and shelves in the case. Also, a new high-performance table of contents (TOC) component will support shelves and bookcases in addition to books. Shelf support will be included for PDFs with a corresponding BookManager file and for stand-alone PDFs (PDFs that do not have a corresponding BookManager file).
  • Improved search: Search dialog and search results will appear in context with, and be synchronized with, the book topic and the TOC. The ability to launch the search function for multiple shelves will also be provided.
  • Enhanced tables: Enhanced HTML table generation will handle most tables, including those with revision bars, complex structures, non-uniform rows, variable width columns, and specific cell data alignment.
  • Handheld device support: A new administrative option will permit end users to generate Library Server HTML pages enabled for clipping. End users will be able to clip page content for display on handheld devices.
