Both ceramic and organic chip carriers support multi-chip module (MCM) technology. Simply defined, an MCM has multiple chips connected to a single carrier.
The carrier interconnects the chips and provides the external connections to the circuit board. MCMs create functional islands using both custom and standard chips. They are important because they can provide
improved system performance and smaller size and weight, while offering a cost-effective solution for many applications. IBM has routinely manufactured MCMs for over 20 years.
