An introduction to 64-bit computing and the PowerPC 970FX
A64-bit computing is well established on IBM's zSeries and POWER-based pSeries systems. Nonetheless, with the introduction of the PowerPC 970 processor family, 64-bit computing is now available on the desktop, on value priced servers, and to the embedded community. This paper will give an overview of 64-bit computing and discuss the advantages of a 64-bit operating system environment.

IBM PowerPC 970FX power envelope and power management
The IBM PowerPC® 970FX microprocessor covers a large frequency and power envelope through the use of dynamic frequency and voltage scaling. This power-tuning allows one to quickly change the frequency from full (f) to half (f/2) and quarter (f/4) frequency at a system level, and for additional power savings, one can apply the resulting voltage reduction. A power envelope shows the complete range of frequency and power available for the microprocessor. In addition to the full frequency power-tuning capabilities, the power-saving modes of doze, nap and deep nap reduce the power envelope, allowing for a reduction of the average power consumption.

Introduction to embedded software development for the IBM PowerPC 970FX processors
This article presents an overview of issues associated with developing new and porting existing software to the IBM PowerPC® 970FX processor. First, an overview of the PowerPC 64-bit architecture as implemented in the PowerPC 970FX processor is presented. An introduction to the PowerPC 64-bit ELF Application Binary Interface (ABI) is also presented followed by a brief discussion of software development tools. The PowerPC 970FX processor can execute PowerPC 32-bit (in 32-bit computation mode) and PowerPC 64-bit (in 64-bit computation mode) programs. This article presents issues associated with porting PowerPC 32-bit software and writing new software to execute in 64-bit computation mode on the PowerPC 970FX processor. An overview of tasks required to run existing PowerPC 32-bit software in 32-bit computation mode is also presented.

The IBM PowerPC 970FX processor for embedded applications
There are many features that make the 64-bit IBM PowerPC® 970FX processor ideal for embedded deployments. A generic 64-bit processor brings an enhanced feature set compared with32-bit processors to the table — but the 970FX brings even more.

In search of a total system solution
The objective of the Avalanche Desktop Reference Management Platform (DRMP) project is to investigate and validate the promise of a complete open source software (OSS) solution from kernel to plug-in. Through this project, Avalanche member companies sought to document the value of lower IT costs through collaboration in the implementation of a complete PowerPC technology based OSS solution. Factors considered in the reduction of total cost of ownership (TCO) included: hardware, support and operational costs, and intangible costs, such as staff familiarity with the software stack and the hardware. Finally, as most senior managers, CFOs, CIOs, or COOs, are not aware of the complexity and risks of OSS and application stack version control, it is Avalanche's objective to enumerate and clarify these issues.
